How Does It Work?
Once you sign-up for the Friendship Sampler quilt Block of the Month club, once a month during the club duration you will receive a special box to include beautiful fabrics, the monthly block pattern with full-size templates to trace and use for needle-turn applique and cutting instructions to follow along and make sections of the Friendship Sampler quilt. At the end of the club you will have a completed quilt top (if you are following our schedule of making), or all the supplies and pattern to make the quilt at your leisure.
The payment date is the 5th of each month (or following quarterly months as outlined above). Kits aim to be dispatched 4 working days after this date. Depending on calendar dates, the dispatch date will be around the 10th of every month.
Further information can be found on our How our BOM clubs work information page.
Alternatively, you can pay for the club in one payment upfront, please drop us an email or call and we can arrange this for you.
The Friendship Sampler Quilt is based upon an antique quilt from North Carolina, USA by Laura Brown McCallum in 1855. Although privately owned, the quilt was included in the North Carolina Quilts book by Ellen F. Eanes and Erma Hughes Kirkpatrick, 1988 and we have been given kind permission from the North Carolina Museum of History to use their photo of the quilt and allow us to recreate this new version of it for our club.
Jessie has meticulously drawn all (but one) the blocks from the quilt - with a new addition, and taken creative license with a few small tweaks and changes here and there. Much of the quilt would have been in bright reds and greens as is famous for quilts from that area of the USA but many of those bright turkey reds have faded over time. For our quilt we will be copying many of the beautifully faded colours in this quilt which gives it a timeworn, classic look.
The original quilt is referenced as a Friendship Sampler as it's thought twelve friends and family members of Laura's made each block in a variety of patterns and each wrote poems or signatures and date and place names on their respective blocks in India Ink.
You will create each of the 12 blocks and 4 borders in the traditional needle-turn applique style on a neutral off-white background. Full-size paper templates will be provided for you to trace to make freezer paper copies, along with a finished block picture for you to copy for layout purposes. The blocks will be sewn together with a very subtle pale pink sashing as the original. The quilt can then be finished with binding in the traditional way (binding is not included in the club, you are free to choose this at a later date).
We will offer a small matching Aurifil 80wt thread set soon which will aid you in creating neat applique stitches.
The finished quilt top will measure approximately 42" wide x 58.25" long.
You will create approximately 2 blocks or border sections each month.
Fabric used for the Friendship Sampler BOM club
Each month's kit is carefully chosen and curated by Jessie. We will be using a selection of beautiful quilting cottons and plains which will suit this antique quilt so well, with a dash of Liberty Fabric as we can always squeeze a subtle print in somewhere! Fabrics will arrive as pre-cut strips ready for you to sub-cut into the size and quantities as per our monthly instructions.
Jessie spends a lot of time choosing and auditioning fabrics for the club, and over the years of running BOM clubs and making quilts, we've found repetition of fabric prints and colours - just as has been demonstrated in the original quilt we are recreating; really makes our quilts extra-special. The fabrics are chosen with great care and attention, and chosen for you.
Please ignore the 'Order on it's way' automated email, dispatch of the kits will follow the 2022 schedule as outlined above.
Due to on-going global supply issues, fabric deliveries to us may be delayed, kit processing times may be delayed and arrival times may be delayed. We will work through this as best as we can, as we did in 2020/2021, but please bare this in mind as we cannot take individual requests on getting your kit to you earlier. If fabric deliveries are delayed we will hold monthly kits until we are able to fulfil the kit in full.
