What's in my monthly BOM kit?
FABRIC: Each month's kit is carefully chosen and curated by Jessie Fincham. To keep things authentic we will be using a variety of Liberty Tana Lawns just as Lucy Boston used for her original POTC quilt, alongside other beautiful quilting cottons to enhance the overall look, which are conveniently pre-cut into strips ready for you to sub-cut as per our instructions. We will be using the premium-quality Art Gallery Elements for the off-white background fabric, it has a wonderful feel to it and works perfectly alongside Liberty Tana Lawns - and we've had excellent feedback on it from using it in previous years club. We are also using a lovely Tana Lawn for the sashing. There will be limited elements of fussy-cutting to do throughout the year and photographs will be included via newsletters for your reference. Please note my version photographed has much more than the original club due to the additional cost involved which would make it beyond the cost for a monthly club.
PAPER PIECES: Cut and packaged by us in-house, our excellent quality, 100% recycled paper templates will be sent to you in varying amounts each month to make up the exact blocks you require. No need to re-use we provide you with enough for the whole quilt top!
WRITTEN INSTRUCTION SHEETS: A monthly instruction sheet which includes fabric swatches for you to match up with your kit. Easy to read cutting instructions, quilt block diagrams and assembly diagrams. I also send out a periodic BOM newsletter via email, which includes any extra details that need to be covered and detailed fussy-cutting photographs when required.
What is the Patchwork Of The Crosses Quilt?
The original pattern was designed and pieced by Lucy Boston in the 1950's. Lucy Boston was from Cambridgeshire, England. Famed for her children's book series Green Knowe. In her spare time and created many beautiful patchworks, pieced over papers in the traditional manner. Since her passing in 1990 these patchworks have become legends in their own right.
What is the size of the quilt?
We have adapted the original quilt for the Sew and Quilt 2018 BOM Club by Jessie Fincham. We will have a 4 x 6 block layout which will be an achievable finish and works well for a 12-month club. Leaving you to quilt and finish in your desired style. The finished quilt top will measure approximately 57-1/2" x 86". Each month you will always make two of the coloured blocks, and varying amounts of the other connectors and joining blocks as well as edging pieces. While Lucy Boston fussy-cut almost all of her blocks in the original quilt, it is simply impossible to work this out on a kit basis for every block within an achievable budget, due to the fabric wastage. So we will be doing limited fussy-cutting in some blocks - with extra fabric to achieve this. The finished quilt will still be marvellous and be sure to become a family heirloom to treasure for years to come!
Each year we have offered our members a special limited edition 'add-on kit' to make your quilt larger. This is a one-off kit that includes all the paper templates, fabrics and instructions to make an additional column for your quilt top so it finishes at a 5 x 6 block layout. We will most likely run this again for 2019, this will be a pre-order over the summer and will be dispatched around September 2019.
Do you offer acrylic templates?
Yes we do! We have a 2-piece template set available for you at £8.45, please select the option when signing up below.
I'm new to English Paper Piecing, is this achievable?
Difficulty: Confident beginner. Assumes a basic knowledge of the English Paper Piecing technique. (I have a very detailed tutorial on my blog if you need guidance). Once you have this practised you are good to go! The instructions are clear, and once you've done a couple of months you will understand the format and you should speed up with practise. We also have a friendly Facebook group with 250+ members who post photo's, advice and spur on the motivation each month! Please remember as well to sew at your own pace, do not feel pressured to 'keep up' with the boxes each month. You are creating an heirloom that will be enjoyed for many decades to come.
